AMED - Since yesterday evening, Turkish police have been violently attacking Diyarbakır's Hasırlı neighborhood. Casualties are reported.

The neighborhood of Hasırlı is located in the Sur district, Diyarbakır's old city. Since yesterday evening, police have been attacking the neighborhood. Police have raked the houses with gunfire and deployed tear gas. Çağlar Demirel is a Parliamentary representative from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP). She said that residents have reported casualties and wounded in the neighborhood.

"The district of Sur is currently under police blockade," said Çağlar this morning. "From yesterday evening until this morning, there were violent clashes. There was no end to the sounds of bombs and gunfire. At this moment, entry and exit to the neighborhood is forbidden."

Çağlar said that the situation was extremely serious. "We're talking about the loss of civilian life," she said. Neighborhood residents reported that one youth has been killed. Police have seized the body and the youth's identity is still unknown.

Police refused permission for Çağlar and other elected officials to enter the neighborhood. The Democratic Regions Party (DBP) has called on the people of Diyarbakır to head to the area to serve as human shields to stop clashes.
