9 killed, 114 tortured in one year at border crossing

EFRÎN - Turkish soldiers have killed nine and tortured 114 people at the border with Efrîn, in Rojava in just one year, according to a new report.

The Efrîn Canton Human Rights Association has released a report on Turkish soldiers' human rights violations at the border between Efrîn and Turkey. Efrîn is the westernmost canton of the Rojava autonomous region in Syria. It shares a significant border with Turkey.

Between August 2014 and August 2015, Turkish soldiers killed nine civilians at the Efrîn-Turkey border. They also tortured 114, according to the human rights organization. In July alone, soldiers killed two and tortured 38 individuals.

The report noted that human rights violations at the border have escalated as the YPG/YPJ have made further advances in Rojava. Violations have included Turkish soldiers regularly the border into Rojava territory to shoot at and torture civilians. On May 19, soldiers set fire to a rural area. The fire destroyed 130 hectares of land, 40 of them olive groves.
