ANKARA - Turkey's Prime Minister has appointed just one woman to the interim cabinet in the country.
After political parties in Turkey failed to form a coalition government, the government has scheduled an early election for November 1. Now, the Prime Minister and President have appointed an interim cabinet until the election. Just one of the 27 ministers in the cabinet is a woman.
The single female minister, Ayşen Gürcan, was appointed to the Ministry of Family and Social Policies. Ayşen, a professor at Istanbul Commerce University, is known as the architect of the "three children policy" of encouraging all women to have three children in the country. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has become notorious for his statements urging women to have at least three children.
