Police attack women's peace march in Istanbul

ISTANBUL - Police attacked a group of women who held a peace march and burned effigies of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Istanbul yesterday.

In the Istanbul neighborhood of Kanarya, young women called a march to protest the AKP's new war in Turkey. Hundreds of women joined the march. At the end of the march, women began to burn effigies of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. They chanted slogans, including "women, life, freedom" and "women want peace."

Then, riot police attacked the women with tear gas and water cannons. Young neighborhood residents fought back with fireworks and stones throughout the evening.
