COLEMÊRG - The people of the Kurdish town of Yüksekova gathered to bid farewell to fallen YJA STAR guerrilla Aysel Bor (nom de guerre Evindar Geli).
Aysel was killed in the province of Şırnak in Northern Kurdistan (in Turkey). State security forces bombarded guerrillas after a clash broke out, killing Aysel. Thousands gathered yesterday in Aysel's native town of Yüksekova for her funeral. Marchers also carried the photographs of Fettah Es and Yakup Babat, two local residents killed when police and soldiers attacked the town.
As neighborhood residents flowed into the streets, the crowd reached perhaps ten thousand. After religious rites in the mosque, women took up the coffin and carried it to the Orman Cemetery. Women fell to their knees in tears at the gravesite.
Selma Irmak, one of the province's Parliamentary representatives and a co-chair of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), spoke at the cemetery. "Kurdistan's revolution belongs to women," said Selma. "And the greatest burden is on their shoulders."
