ANKARA - A delegation of Peace Mothers activists has met with UN and UK ambassadors to ask them to mediate to end Turkey's war in Kurdistan.

The Peace Mothers Assembly is an organization of women from Northern Kurdistan in Turkey who work against war in the region. The women traveled to Ankara yesterday to meet with diplomatic representatives in Turkey. The women requested to meet with representatives from the U.S., Germany and Iran, but received no response. However, the women were able to meet with British and UN diplomats in the Turkish capital.

Peace Mother Songül Çelik referred to the February announcement at Istanbul's Dolmabahçe Palace. There, government representatives presented a proposal for a democratization process in Turkey, drafted by jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan. Songül said that the mothers wanted to see a return to this commitment. "In short, we want negotiations to begin again," she said.

Songül pointed to the role of all imperialist powers in the repression of Kurdistan. She said it was necessary for the dirty war to end and for Kurds' legitimate demands to be considered.

The meetings with ambassadors went well, said Songül. The Peace Mothers requested that the representatives make an effort to stop the war immediately and to serve as third parties in the negotiations. Representatives promised to pass on the requests.

"This people will obtain a just peace without delay," said Songül.
