NEWS CENTER - Journalist Nilüfer Demir, who photographed the body of three-year-old refugee Aylan Kurdi washed up on a beach in Turkey, spoke about the famous photograph.
Nilüfer Demir is the journalist who took the chilling picture of the dead body of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi. Aylan was a refugee from Kobanê who drowned off the coast of Bodrum, Turkey while attempting to cross into Europe.
"When I saw three-year-old Aylan Kurdi, my blood really froze," said Nilüfer. "There was not a single thing I could do for him. The only thing I could do was to make people hear the cry of that lifeless body on the ground. And I thought, the only way I can do this is by pushing the shutter and taking that photograph."
100 meters further down the beach, Aylan's older brother Galip was also washed up on the shore. None of the children had life vests, water wings or life preservers.
"This really exhibited the drama of the situation. But the only thing I could do at that moment was to take a photograph and that's what I dids," said Nilüfer.
