AMED- Azize Erkutlu was assigned as a co-mayor after the arrest of the co-mayors in Diyarbakir’s Sur district. “It should be known: we will increase this struggle with the people,” said Azize.
After the announcement of “self-government” in parts of Northern Kurdistan, co-mayors were arrested in Sur, Silvan, Hakkari, Edremit and Nusaybin. Azize Erkutlu was assigned as a proxy co-mayor in the Sur district of Diyarbakır.
Azize said, “It’s not a coincidence that they arrest women co-mayors. They are trying to put pressure on women. This system doesn’t accept the co-mayor system that is already there. It means they are trying to ignore women’s decision. For sure, our women fellows always worked everywhere and they will continue to work everywhere after this.
“Women are so sensitive about peace and the process of it. As women, we don’t want to see any mother crying. And we will take all responsibility to make progress for the peace process,” Azize said. She also noted that the reason of the arrest was that co-mayors were at the announcement of self-government. They were judged “to have broken state integrity.” Azize said, “People would want to see co-mayors next to them who are chosen from the people. They based their stance on people’s expectations. It’s not fair to judge co-mayors because of that.”
Azize said, “We insist on peace as always. We believe peace will come to this country through women’s effort and struggle. And women should be on the front line in this peace procress. We will increase this struggle with the people.”
