NEWS CENTER – Turkey’s Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) has issued an urgent call to civil society groups and governments around the world to support an immediate ceasefire in Turkey as violence escalates.

The HDP has issued an urgent international call for action to stop Turkey from drifting into a civil war. The statement calls for international groups to support a resumption of peace talks between the Turkish state and the Kurdish PKK guerrillas.

The statement said that the AKP is launching military attacks on Kurdish civilians while maintaining tight control over information to keep reports from reaching national and international media. Turkish security forces have so far killed 21 civilians in just one week in the Kurdish town of Cizre, leading to serious concerns among the province’s elected HDP representatives that a massacre is immanent. Meanwhile, the ruling AKP has incited racist groups to attack Kurds and the HDP across Turkey.

“In spite of these adverse developments, we call on all international communities, civil society organizations and the international media for solidarity and support to bring about an immediate cease-fire and the commencement of peace talks,” wrote the HDP. “We now need the support of the international public more than ever in order to achieve the realization of a lasting peace in the Middle East, Turkey and Kurdistan.”

The party called on allies around the world to act in solidarity with the HDP and to stop Turkey’s violent, anti-democratic actions against its own citizens.
