AMED – The Turkish government has announced a curfew today in the Sur district of the main Kurdish city of Diyarbakır. Civilians are heading to the area from across the city in an attempt to de-escalate the attack.
As the Turkish state pushes for a conflict in Northern Kurdistan, Turkish state security forces are again targeting the Sur district of Diyarbakır. The governor of the province declared a curfew in the district starting at 5:00 a.m. today. Previously, on September 6, the governor had also declared a round-the-clock curfew, during which police raided the district armed with heavy weapons.
As soon as the curfew came into effect today, police began an attempt to invade the streets of the Sur district. Police have been opening fire at random in the streets and have positioned snipers on tall buildings in the area.
Residents of the district have taken to the streets chanting slogans and holding a noise demo to protest the police. Others have set up barricades to protect their homes from the armored vehicles that have blockaded the neighborhoods. At least one resident, a 16-year-old child, has been wounded by police fire.
The political parties Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and Democratic Regions Party (DBP) have called on all residents of Diyarbakır to head for the Sur district to protest and prevent a massacre.
