AMED – Residents of the largely Kurdish town of Silvan have refused to recognize a curfew declared by the state. Police have killed at least one resident in an assault on the town.
The Turkish state continues to push for conflict in the Northern Kurdistan region, declaring a curfew in the largely Kurdish town of Silvan (in Diyarbakır province). Clashes broke out once again in the town yesterday as police attempted to enter neighborhoods being governed by local residents.
The curfew was first declared in the three neighborhoods of Tekel, Mescit and Konak, then in the entirety of the district of Silvan. Early in the morning, large numbers of police and soldiers were deployed to Silvan, with snipers positioned on rooftops and Internet cut.
As clashes intensified, a delegation of Parliamentary representatives from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) headed to Silvan, where they learned that many had been wounded and one young resident killed. Police blockaded the town’s hospital to prevent the treatment of the wounded.
The police attacks are continuing today, as residents refuse to recognize the ongoing curfew despite the intense police attacks.
