ISTANBUL – Residents at an Istanbul medical school and hospital will strike after a leading doctor in the hospital ignored and legitimized violence against women.
“When you get married, you’ll get beaten by your husband anyway. These are normal things,” said Dr. Halit Çam when women residents reported that they were attacked on the job by relatives of their patients. The doctor is a professor at Istanbul University’s Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty and head of the Pediatric Emergency Department.
The residents at Cerrahpaşa will be going on strike, demanding an administrative investigation against Dr. Halit Çam for his sexist insults against their colleagues.
