ŞIRNEX – Turkish soldiers shot and killed a 23-year-old woman named Latife Tutuk in the largely Kurdish town of Silopi yesterday.
Yeseterday evening, Latife Tutuk (23) set out to visit a neighbor in the Yeşiltepe neighborhood of the largely Kurdish town of Silopi, located in Turkey’s Şırnak province. Soldiers opened fire on her as she walked by. Latife was taken to the hospital, but could not be saved. Today, after religious rites in Silopi, Silopi women marched with Latife’s coffin on their shoulders to the graveyard in her neighborhood for her burial. The crowd frequently chanted the slogan “killer Erdoğan” at the funeral.
Faysal Sarıyıldız of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), who represents the province of Şırnak in Turkey’s Parliament, spoke at Latife’s funeral. He critiqued the Prime Minister’s claim that there have been “no civilian losses” in the approximately two months of war in Northern Kurdistan (in Turkey). In fact, he said, soldiers and police have killed nearly 40 civilians.
