NEWS CENTER - After 70 years, a woman was executed in the state of Georgia in the U.S. 47-year-old Kelly Renee Gissendaner was accused of killing her husband.
Kelly was arrested in 1996 for killing her husband Doug Gissendaner in the U.S. state of Georgia. State courts decided on the death penalty for Kelly in 1997. Pope Francis, during his travel in the U.S., has called for the abolishment of death penalty globally and for the government to forgive Kelly. Applications by Kelly’s lawyer remained inconclusive, and Kelly was executed by lethal injection. Kelly was the first woman hanged in Georgia in 70 years.
According to reports, Kelly’s boyfriend Gregory Owens killed Doug Gissendaner. Gregory bargained with the prosecutor by giving a confession. His penalty was lowered to life imprisonment. Kelly, a mother of three children, was convicted and given the death penalty.
53 women are still on death row in America.
