KOBANÊ - Women in Kobanê, the symbol of resistance, have finished their self-defense training and are ready to stand watch over the city.
In the Rojava autonomous region in Syria, women are leading the struggle to build a new life--as well as the effort to defend it. In the city of Kobanê, where fighters resisted a Daesh siege for five months in 2014 and 2015, neighborhood women are now participating in weapons training to defend their city against such attacks as well as to defend themselves against violence against women.
50 women from the Şehit Serhat neighborhood of the city have finished this training. Their training session was named for Fatîma Simo, a Kobanê woman who was among the 223 residents of the city killed in Daesh June 25 attack. After two days of weapons training, the women will now stand guard as part of the city's self-defense mobilization.
As of yesterday, another such training has started. 25 women from the Şehit Yahya neighborhood will receive a similar training in the villages around Kobanê. They will then protect their neighborhoods as part of the HPC local defense forces.
