ISTANBUL - 40 have been detained in the city of Istanbul as part of the Turkish state's attack on Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) activists. Women journalists and nursing mothers are among the arrestees.

Special teams from the Istanbul Police Department's Anti-Terror Department raided homes in 28 districts of the city, sweeping up 40 HDP activists and members of the opposition. It emerged that the police originally planned to detain 66 in the raids.

Among those in police custody are Leyla Yılan, a woman with a 6-month-old baby. Leyla's lawyers have petitioned for her infant to be allowed to be brought into the police station so that Leyla can nurse her.

Hicran Ürün, who edits the women's news page of the newspaper Özgür Gündem (Free Agenda), was also detained.
