ANKARA - Married women can use their own last names in Turkey, according to a ruling of the Supreme Court Assembly of Civil Chambers (YHGK). Also, divorced women can give their last names to their children.

Even though married women can use double last names (their own and their husband’s), they cannot use their own last names alone in Turkey. When women sue for using their maiden names, YHGK has refused their demands up to the present.

YHGK took into account the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and approved a new ruling about last names. From now on, women can use their last names, and when they divorce, they will give their last names to their children.
