AMED - Nûjîn Women’s Center was founded by the slogan of “to free society with free women”, and they have given educations in professional fields and self-defense. Also, Nûjîn hold seminars about communication with children, family communication, Kurdish and English languages, women’s health, women’s economical rights, legal rights and gender mainstreaming.

Nûjîn Women’s Center was founded in the district of Bismil in Diyarbakır. The center has been second address for local women for six years. Bismil has been conducted by a woman mayor for three periods. Mayor of the district and the center strengthen the district to build a “woman city”. Nûjîn Women’s Center gives education almost all subjects. Recently, they have concentrated on the education of self-defense.

Saadet Akçin is a psychological counselor in the Nûjîn Women’s Center. She talked about women’s problems in the district of Bismil. She said that women are deeply affected by war, militarism, poverty and social gender inequality. She mentioned that Bismil is one of the cities which allow forced migration.

“As Nûjîn Women’s Center, we try to transform this city for women. We aimed to support women psychologically, economically and culturally. We want to strengthen solidarity among women,” Saadet said.

Saadet explained their plans about social gender inequality.

“We want to support women for their struggle on the way of being subject. One of the our targets is that women take a place in society,” she said. “Self-defense is very important for women especially in the recent times. We think that self-defense education is also given women and children. They should know how they defend themselves. We should defend us against any attacks. We will continue our works for women.”
