Funeral for police violence victim Dilek Doğan

ISTANBUL – Yesterday, crowdsheld a ceremony forDilekDoğan, slain by police in Istanbul. Dilek's mother spoke at the funeral to condemn the police.

On Sunday, October 18, Turkish police shot a young woman named DilekDoğan during a house raid in the Küçükarmutlu neighborhood of Istanbul.Dileklost her life Sunday night after being treated for a week in the Okmeydanı Teaching and Research Hospital.

Residents of the Küçükarmutlu neighborhood and members of left groups were among the many in attendance at the funeral for Dilek. Attendees sang funeral dirges in Kurdish and Turkish. The young woman's body was wrapped in the red flag.

AyselDoğan, Dilek's mother, spoke at the funeral. She recalled that when the police shot her daughter, she initially thought they had fired into the air until Dilek fell at her feet. Aysel said she recognized her daughter's killer. "I don't bow down to killers," said Aysel.

After songs by the band GrupYorum and a meal in Dilek's honor at the local cemevi (Alevi house of worship), women took Dilek's body on their shoulders and carried her to her home for religious rites. The crowd then marched to Armutlu Square, chanting "DilekDoğan is our honor." Dilek's body was sent to her native province of Maraş.
