UNICEF announced that one of every three girls are married before 18. The African Union aims to set the minimum age of marriage after the age 18 on the continent.
UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said "The data is also clear that ending child marriage requires a much sharper focus on reaching the poorest and most marginalized girls, those in greatest need and at greatest risk, with quality education and a host of other protective services. Their lives, and the futures of their communities, are at stake. Each child bride is an individual tragedy. An increase in their number is intolerable."

The African Union is reviewing progress in this area and they are trying to persuade the governments to prohibit the chil marriage which eliminates the future of young women.
