Men killed 19 women in December in Turkey

NEWS CENTER – According to a tally of male violence against women in Turkey in December 2015, men killed 19 women over the past month. They also killed two men and children who were with the women at the time of killing.

According to media website Bianet’s survey of news sources, men killed 19 women in Turkey in December 2015. Men abused 25 women, raped 11 women and girls, forced 12 women and girls to perform sex work, and harassed 13 women and girls. The total number of women killed by men in 2015 in Turkey was at least 278.

The murderers of four of the women killed in December have not been identified. In addition, one woman was found dead in the street under suspicious circumstances.

21% of the women killed were killed by husbands from whom they were living separately. 16% of the women were killed because they wanted a divorce. 42% of the women were killed by their husbands, boyfriends, or fiancés.

Two of the women killed had filed charges against their killers for threats, insults, injury, and forced sex work. A total of nine protection orders had been issued for these women. One woman was killed by her ex-husband, who had previously detonated a gas canister in her car. She had repeatedly reported the killer.

22% of the 25 women wounded by male violence in December had been attacked nearly to the point of death. 63% of these women were wounded by their husbands, 18.5% by their ex-partners. Others were attacked by their fathers, ex-boyfriends, and harassers.

11 reports of rape appeared in the media in December. In addition, 11 women and girls lacking Turkish citizenship were forced into sex work. 13 cases of harassment appeared in the media.
