AMED – The first congress of the new organization Free Democratic Young Woman has begun in the city of Diyarbakır.

The new organization Free Democratic Young Women (ÖDGK) has begun its first regular congress. Hundreds of young women from across Kurdistan have headed to Diyarbakır for the congress, whose slogan refers to a long line of Kurdish women in resistance. The congress began with the revolutionary march “Çerxa Şoreşê” and a moment of silence for those who lost their lives in the resistance.

“We have not surrendered in forty years of struggle,” said ÖDGK member Mehtap Kıyar, giving the opening speech of the congress. “And today, under the leadership of young women, we will not surrender to the sanctions of society.”

Ceylan Bağrıyanık, a member of the delegation that has met with jailed PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) leader Abdullah Öcalan, also spoke at the congress, saying that women would organize in all areas of life to defend against the AKP’s ongoing attacks against the Kurdish people.

The congress is continuing.
