ŞIRNEX – Hundreds of women marched today in the city of Şırnak, where Turkish state forces have prevented local people from retrieving dead bodies left in the street for five days.

Hundreds gathered today in Şırnak, called by the women’s organization KJA (Congress of Free Women) to condemn the killing of Kurdish women. The women held a memorial for the three Kurdish women politicians assassinated three years ago in Paris (Sakine Cansız, Leyla Şaylemez and Fidan Doğan) and for the three Kurdish women politicians slain in the nearby town of Silopi on Monday (Sêvê Demir, Fatma Uyar and Pakize Nayir).

The women marched to the Şırnak State Hospital, where the bodies of the three women slain in Silopi remain in the morgue. As hundreds marched, chanting “women, life, freedom” and other slogans, riot control vehicles and Ford Rangers were seen following the crowd. Slain woman Pakize Nayir’s younger sister Kumru Nayir led the marchers, carrying a photograph of her sister. After a statement, the women left carnations at the door of the morgue.

The crowd of hundreds of women then headed for the Dicle neighborhood, where the bodies of two local youths shot five days ago remain on the ground, as Turkish state forces threaten to kill anyone who attempts to retrieve them. The women were unable to enter the neighborhood due to barricades.
