MERSIN – Women headed to the grave of Leyla Şaylemez in Mersin province on the third anniversary of her killing along with two of her comrades in Paris.
Three years ago today, Leyla Şaylemez was killed, along with fellow Kurdish women politicians Fidan Doğan and Sakine Cansız, in Paris.
As a crowd called by women’s organization KJA gathered in Mersin province today ahead of a memorial for Leyla Şaylemez, police attacked. The people dispersed into the back streets and began resisting against the police. Despite minutes of police attacks, women managed to board buses to Leyla Şaylemez’ gravesite. Women held a moment of silence at the grave, where a heavy police presence was in place.
“As long as this massacre is not investigated, the Kurdish problem will not be solved,” said Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) representative Nursel Aydoğan.
After speeches, the group left carnations at Leyla’s grave.
