NEWS CENTER – The City Council of Barcelona, capital of the autonomous Catalan region, has called on the government of Turkey to end its violent attacks in Kurdistan.

The Barcelona City Council has addressed a letter to the city’s Turkish consul, Amir Salim Yüksel. The letter, which Deputy Mayor Gerald Pisarello states was written as a response to the calls for action made by municipal governments in besieged cities, calls on the Turkish government to rethink its policies towards the Kurdistan region.

"The curfews imposed in several Turkish cities and the damage suffered by buildings such as the Kurşunlu Mosque and Pasha Haman, part of a UNESCO heritage site, shows that Turkey has entered a dangerous path away from peace. In this sense, the murder of social activists and known feminist women in the Kurdish region require us to send you this letter asking the government to reconsider its position,” said the letter, referring to the assassination of three Kurdish women activists in the city of Silopi on January 4.

Gerald Pisarello noted that the government’s “comments about the extermination of a population in the supposed war against terrorism” have worsened the situation in the region.
