AMED – In the İskenderpaşa neighborhood of Diyarbakır’s Sur district, where a de facto curfew is in effect, children painted pictures of war and peace today as the sounds of tanks and artillery boomed in the background.

For 46 days, Turkish state forces have maintained a 24-hour curfew in the Sur district of Diyarbakır province. In the Sur neighborhood of İskenderpaşa, locals are maintaining a vigil in protest of the attacks. Today, actors from the Diyarbakır municipality’s City Theater headed to İskenderpaşa to host a painting and drawing activity for the children of Sur.

The children, ranging in age from five to 12, painted brightly colored images of the world they know. Notably, the butcher paper was dotted with phrases like “we want peace,” “freedom,” “uprising” and “Kurdistan,” as well as images of heavy artillery and war jets.

The children chanted, “long live the Sur resistance” over the sounds of artillery and tanks.
