ŞIRNEX – In the town of Şırnak, facing attacks by Turkish state forces, women have declared the formation of the Women’s Civil Defense Forces (YPS-Jin).

Women’s Civil Defense Forces (YPS-Jin) have been declared in a number of cities in Kurdistan, most recently in the town of Şırnak, capital of Şırnak province. The unit’s name, the Martyr Fatma Division, honors women’s rights activist Fatma Uyar and the other Kurdish women activists recently killed in the town of Silopi.

“They have denied the rights to democratic politics and even the right to life to us as women, as they have for our entire people. And once again, they are attempting to implement a monotone and reactionary mindset, against the mosaic of people of Turkey,” said the women in their founding statement. “As they know, the women and youth of the Kurdish people do not accept the colonization they have forced on us any longer.”

The statement noted that throughout history, the Kurdish people have defended themselves, with women leading this dynamic of self-defense.

“As the gang of the AKP and the attack of the state kill women and children most, we will respond with our self-defense,” said the women.

The women condemned the targeted assassination of three Kurdish women politicians—Sêvê Demir, Pakize Nayir and Fatma Uyar—in the town of Silopi, which like Şırnak is part of the Botan region of Kurdistan.

“We are saying that we, as the YPS-Jin of Botan, will get revenge for our three comrades,” said the women.
