ANKARA – After Professor Gökçen Alpkaya of Ankara University’s School of Political Science included a question on a recent exam relating to the “Academics for Peace” statement recently released in Turkey, police have begun an investigation into the professor.
1,128 academics in Turkey signed a statement calling for the Turkish state to end its assault on the Kurdistan region and to return to the peace process. Shortly thereafter, dozens of academics were arrested and dismissed in the course of a police investigation against the signatories of the “Academics for Peace” statement. Mafia boss Sedat Peker made threats against the academics involving an expressed wish to “bathe in blood.”
On a written exam, Professor Gökçen Alpkaya asked students at Ankara University to analyze the recent events, including the statement itself and Sedat Peker’s threats, in the context of international law. Turkish police have now announced an investigation into Gökçen.
