Turkish state forces continue to maintain 24-hour martial law in the state of Cizre. Yesterday morning, state forces attacked and wounded university student Helin Öncü, then opened fire, preventing her from being taken to the hospital. Later that day, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) issued an injunction on the practice, calling for Helin’s right to medical care to be recognized.
A group of women, including Cizre People’s Assembly co-chair Asya Yüksel, headed into the Cudi neighborhood to evacuate Helin. Cizre police were aware of the women’s presence. However, as they were carrying Helin to the ambulance, state forces opened fire on them. The women went missing.
Local residents managed to evacuate the women and to successfully bring Helin to the ambulance. She was hospitalized yesterday evening.
