AMED - Türkan Uzan Avşin and Mehmet Ergün, the city council members of Yenişehir Municipality in Diyarbakır, and Baki Öndeş, municipal official, have been taken into custody in house raids.

Self- government was declared in Yenişehir last week under the leadership of Yenişehir Democratic People 's Assembly in Sümerpark Yaşam Area. It is thought that the arrests are related to this declaration.

A press statement was made in front of the municipal building on the issue. Ülkü Baytaş, co-mayor of Yenişehir, said, "Our councillors and official were taken into custody in the morning in house raids. As management and officials of Yenişehir Municipality, we support Türkan Uzan Avşin, Mehmet Ergün and Baki Öndeş' right to participate in the declaration within the scope of freedom of expression."
