AMED - A piece of a shell hit a house recently in Sur's İskenderpaşa neighborhood. Previously in the same street, mortar fire struck and killed resident Melek Alpaydın. İskenderpaşa neighborhood is not a part of the "24-hour curfew" area. However, state forces' attacks have continued in the neighborhood. "They are trying to force us migrate, but we won't leave our lands," said the women on a vigil.
For 55 days, state forces' attacks have continued in the Sur district of Diyarbakır. Local people in the İskenderaşa and Lalebey neighborhoods of Sur have maintained a vigil for Sur. These two neighborhoods are not part of the "24-hour curfew" area. However, resident Melek Alpaydın died due to a mortar that hit her house in the Büyükakar street, when she was having breakfast with her children on January 3. Yesterday, a piece of a shell hit a house again in the same street. Women who live in the neighborhood reacted to state forces.
Stating that shells hit the neighborhoods, Hatice Yılmaz said they cannot sleep due to heavy artillery sounds. "Several days ago, a woman died due to a mortar that hit her house in the neighborhood. What does the state want from us? We cannot be safe, even in our house. We won't leave our neighborhoods and our houses. We will never surrender to the state's oppression.
"They fire mortars at us in order to force us to leave our houses. However, they will not manage to scare us. They are angry about not entering Sur for 55 days. They are trying to annihilate us. However, they should know that they cannot."
Aynur Hüseyinoğlu, another woman in the neighborhoods, said, "Our children are affected by gunshots. We cannot sleep due to gunshots. We don't have peace and quiet in our houses anymore. The state has oppressed us for years. We want peace, but they insist on war."
