AMED – As the city of Diyarbakır shut down in a day of action for the besieged district of Sur today, police attacked a popular march to Sur.

For 57 days, Turkish state forces have maintained a genocidal assault on the Sur district of Diyarbakır. As shopkeepers kept their shutters closed across the city in a demonstration of support for Sur today, local NGOs and political parties called for a march to the besieged district at 1 p.m. today.

As people gathered at the historic city walls’ Double Gate, police attacked the gathering crowd with tear gas and water cannons. Clashes broke out on the nearby avenue and side streets in the wake of the police attack.
