AMED – Today, Turkish state forces extended the 24-hour curfews in effect in many parts of the Sur district of Diyarbakır to even more of the district. As police attacked with heavy weapons, wounding two, Sur residents declared that they will not submit to forced migration.
For 57 days, Turkish state forces have maintained a blockade on the Sur district of the city of Diyarbakır. With 24-hour martial law already in effect in six neighborhoods of the district, today Turkish state forces added five more neighborhoods to the list of those where the “curfews,” or total martial law, will be imposed.
Since this morning, police have been touring the area of Melikahmet Avenue with loudspeakers, telling residents “empty your houses, move your cars off the avenue.”
Turkish state forces deployed armored vehicles to major avenues and began attacking the back streets with heavy weapons, sparking clashes. Two residents of the Abdalded neighborhood (Neytullah and Mehmet Aktaş) were wounded in the clashes. They are currently in treatment in hospital.
“We will never leave our home,” said Sur resident Fatma Şimşek, reacting to the attacks. “We come under the state’s attacks every day. The state is determined to annihilate us, but we’re Kurds; they don’t know who they’re fighting with here.”
Three soldiers have passed away in the clashes, with six soldiers wounded.
