ISTANBUL – After a 3:00 a.m. rape of a 19-year-old woman in Istanbul drew social media comments asking “why should a girl be out at that hour?” Istanbul women staged an action at 3:00 a.m. to declare that they would not abandon the streets.
Recently, a young woman was sexually assaulted and mugged in Istanbul while returning home at 3:00 a.m. in the Kadıköy district. However, the social media reaction was not criticism of the rapist. Instead, a Twitter poll critical of the woman went viral. The poll asked, “what business did she have out on the street at 3:00 a.m.?”
Women from Turkey’s Republican People’s Party (CHP) in the Avcılar district of the city gathered at 3:00 a.m. last night and opened a banner that read: “It’s 3:00 a.m. and we’re in the street. We stand against crimes against humanity every where, at every hour, in all conditions.” The women protested for their right to be in the streets.
