ŞIRNEX – For seven days, a group of wounded Cizre residents have been trapped in a basement in the town as Turkish state forces bombard the building. Last night, Turkish state forces maintained a nightlong bombardment on the 19 wounded residents trapped in the basement.

One week ago, a group of 28 people wounded in Turkish state attacks took refuge in a basement in Cizre’s Cudi neighborhood. As those outside attempt to get ambulances to the wounded, the Turkish state forces have stopped them at every turn. Six of the wounded have succumbed to their wounds so far.

Faysal Sarıyıldız, Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP for Cizre’s province of Şırnak, shared a message that the wounded sent to him. The wounded in the basement reported that after two days without any water, they found around one liter of water in an old water tank in the basement. The wounded spread the water on their lips in an attempt to stay alive. The report also noted that the wounded were unable to speak.

Ambulances belonging to the Cizre city government attempted to reach the wounded twice last night, but were blocked by state forces both times. The healthcare workers in the ambulances were taken to the police station for interrogation.

State forces continued intermittent tank and artillery bombardments on the building overnight, lasting until morning. The many armored vehicles deployed around the outside of the house occasionally also attacked with grenades and machine gun fire on the building.
