4 wounded in Istanbul protests

ISTANBUL – Last night, police attacked protests in the Gazi and Okmeydanı neighborhoods of Istanbul with live ammunition, wounding two in Gazi and two in Okmeydanı.

In the Gazi neighborhood of Istanbul, a crowd gathered to protest the ongoing massacres in Kurdistan last night. Police opened fire on the crowd from an armored vehicle, wounding two people, one of them a woman. The police also raided the neighborhood’s Alevi house of worship, the Gazi Cemevi.

Meanwhile, in the Okmeydanı neighborhood of the city, youth gathered to protest the February 15 capture of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan in an international plot. As police special forces prepared to attack the protest with armored vehicles, the youth responded with Molotov cocktails, sound grenades and guns.

As clashes continued, the youth read a statement. They condemned the ongoing atrocities in Kurdistan on the 17th anniversary of Abdullah Öcalan’s capture.

Police opened fire with live ammunition, wounding two people. One of the two, Ergin Çelik, was seriously wounded in the eye and was hospitalized. Four were arrested.
