‘We will continue to fight for our mother language’

NEWS CENTER –The International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is held on 21 February to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The pressure and assimilation policies on the Kurdish language was pointed out on the mother language day. The message of “We will not surrender our mother language” was given.
On the International Mother Language Day (IMLD), Kurdish people gave the message “We will not surrender our mother language” in Mardin, Kızıltepe, Diyarbakır,Çınar, Ergani, Van, Siirt, Hakkari, Ağrı, İzmir and many cities in Turkey.
Mardin
Ahmet Türk and Februniye Akyol Akay, co-mayors of Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, issued a message regarding the International Mother Language Day. The message was in Kurdish and Turkish. The message reads; “Every society who don’t think in their mother language and speak in their mother language, is doomed by moving away from their historic and value. Therefore, we say that Prohibition of a language is a genocide. Every language is a color in the history of humanity. We celebrate all people’s the International Mother Language Day.”
DİYARBAKIR
KURDİ-DER and Democratic Society Congress (DTK) made a statement for the International Mother Language Day. The statement was made in front of the DTK Office. Selma Irmak, the co-chair of the DTK, Nursel Aydoğan and Feleknas Uca, the HDP MPs, Fırat Anlı and Gültan Kışanak, the co-mayors of Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality and many organisations and people attended the statement.
HAKKARİ
A statement was made in the leadership of the Kurdish Language Movement (TZP) within the scope of the International Mother Language Day. The statement was made in Former Prison Junction. However, armored vehicles were closed the roads in the Cengiz Topel avenue. Then the police attacked the people with tear gas and forced to close the stores in the Avenue.
The people gathered by carrying the banners. Doğan Engüdar, the co-chair of the KURDİ-DER branch, made a statement. “You cannot ignore the language, culture, history and the existence of the Kurdish people. We will continue to fight for freedom of our language.”
People celebrated the International Mother Language Day and demand to speak freely in their mother languages in many cities.
