'Solidarity with Beritan is our duty'

ANKARA - Our reporter Beritan Canözer, who was taken into custody for being "excited", has been in jail for three months. The first hearing of Beritan is on March 29. Female journalists sent a message of solidarity. "Solidarity with Beritan and female journalists is our duty," said female journalists and they said they will follow Beritan's case.

People and MPs organized a march to protest and break the siege in the Sur district of Diyarbakır. Our reporter Beritan Canözer was covering the protest while special forces surrounded Beritan in Ofis area of Diyarbakır and took her into custody for being "excited". Beritan was taken into custody by an armored vehicle on December 16, 2016. Beritan Canözer's first hearing will be held on March 29. Female journalists from Ankara sent a message of solidarity with Beritan.

Ekin Saltık, reporter of Evrensel Newspaper, stated that they will follow the case on March 29. She said, "We are in a very hard period. They try the journalists who aren't stand with them. Beritan was taken into custody for being "excited and she was held under detention for four days within the scope of "reasonable doubt". Beritan has been in jail for 116 days on charges of "being members of a terror organization".

Ekin called on everyone to attend Beritan's trial and she said, "Being a excited journalist isn't a crime. We will attend the first hearing of Beritan to say "Being journalist isn't a crime" to those who judge the journalists and journalism."

Ceren Bayar, reporter of İMC TV, stated that Beritan Canözer is in the jail now because she is the voice of Diyarbakır's women children and all civilians and she reports the true. "Solidarity sustains us in these bad days. Being in solidarity with jailed academics, laywers, politicians, journalists and women sustains us. The history will write Beritan not those who jailed her."

Nimet Ölmez, the reporter of Dicle News Agency (DİHA), stated that Beritan Canözer who has been in jailed for three months, must be released. Nimet said, "We all are "excited" like Beritan!"
