AMED - The citizens those who saw the destruction and savagery with their eyes in the streets of Sur after "curfew" was lifted in the town, described what happened as follows: "The state has proved its hostility to the Kurdish people once again. There were a state's terrorism here and popular resistance against it. The only responsible for this destruction is the state."
24-hour cufew, declared in the Sur district of Diyarbakır on December 2, 2015, is still imposed on a large part of the district. The curfew was lifted in 14 streets of three neighborhoods on March 17. Burned and demolished houses, killed children, women and youths, damaged historical artifacts, bashed animals' heads and established police checkpoints indicate the approach against the cultural heritage, nature and citizens. The habitants of the district describe what happened as "Popular resistance against the state's terrorism."
Ayfer Can said that she deeply regret to leave her home; however, she will never leave Sur under any circumstances. She said, "Wedidn't want to leave our home; however, they forced us to leave. I never thought I would find my home like that when I left here. Why doesn't the state like Kurdish people? They look at us like their enemies. We have left our home once but we won't leave it twice. I will never leave Sur to them again."
Sevda Aydın said that she came from Istanbul to Diyarbakır to see Sur after the ban. Sevda has been walking in the streets of Sur for one week. She said that she will tell everyone in Istanbul what happened here. She said, "I never expected the destruction in Sur would be so much when I was in Istanbul. We still cannot enter some streets. Coming here and speaking to the citizens here answer the questions I asked while I was Istanbul.
"The state is entirely responsible for the pillage in Sur. The state itself has encouraged and ordered to the police to shoot the people. The resistance in Sur was a popular struggle. The people in the West must come and see what happened in Sur."
Owner of a cafe in Dabanoğlu Neighborhood Mervan Çiçek said, "The state has proved its hostility to the Kurdish people once again. They say they bring peace to Sur; they only bring destruction and death to Sur. They bombed everywhere without caring if there was civilians in the district or not in the neighborhoods. The war here was a popular war. They weren't terrorists."
