‘The state destroyed our home, but we rebuilt it’

AMED – Neziye Zengin, who rebuilt her home that was destroyed and pillaged in Sur, said, “No one believed that we would return our home to previous condition. However, we did. We make it more beautiful than before, we will never leave Sur.”
As 24-hour curfew has been imposed on Diyarbakır’s Sur district since December 2, 2015, the people those who live in neighborhoods where curfew has been lifted, rebuild their life again. Woman, who say, “We won’t leave Sur.”, are cleaning and putting in order their neighborhoods and home in order to make them livable again. Neziye Zengin is one of these women. She faced with great destruction when she returned to her home in Dabanoğlu Neighborhood of Sur. Everything was broken in the yard-type house. Sexist graffiti were on the wall of her home. After 20 days, Neziye made her home livable again. Neziye saluted everyone by saying, “Welcome to my home”. While Neziye looked at the ruins her home in where she hid her memories, she also explained why she rebuilt her home and she would never leave it.
Neziye’s family cleaned their home and re-painted the walls of their home in 20 days. Neziye said that they had many difficulties within that period; however they didn’t give up and said, “The state demolished our home, but we rebuilt it.”
Erasing all traces of the pillage and destruction Neziye said, “There was nothing left from our home when I returned here. They broke all of our doors and windows. Police came here to look what we did when we returned here. They asked us, “Will you continue to live here?” We told them, “If we leave our home second times, our corpses will leave not us.” We have cleaned here for 20 days. No one believed that we would return our home to previous condition. However, we did. We will make it more beautiful than before. They thought that we wouldn’t return to our home. However, we didn’t make them happy and we rebuilt our home.We came back here again.”
