AMED - As three-month State of Emergency declared in Turkey, martial law and state of emergency applications have been imposed on Diyarbakır's Sur district for eight months. Sabiha Gündüz from Sur says that if people hadn't stayed silent against what was going on in Sur, state of emergency wouldn't have been declared.
"Curfews" have been imposed on Kurdistan more than one year. Kurdistan women those who have experienced state of emergency in neighborhoods and villages since 1980 ask, "Why did people stay silent about what we faced?" Sabiha Gündüz, who lives in Sur's Alipaşa Neighborhood, said, "if people hadn't stayed silent against what was going on in Sur, state of emergency wouldn't have been declared. People kept silent by saying "Kurds deserve what is going on" and now they have experienced similar things what we experienced."
Sabiha pointed out that they live under the sound of tanks and artillery fire for almost one year, their living spaces have been pillaged, and their relatives were killed. "All people closed their eyes when state forces came down on us with their weapons. We are all human and we have rights to go out and live. The people those who closed their eyes what we faced, are greeted state of emergency (OHAL) with astonishment now. If people took democratic steps and went out that time, this wouldn't happen now.
"When I saw on TV what they did to soldiers during coup attempt, I was deeply in sorrow. But the people, who ordered to these soldiers, did much worse thing to our young people here for months. Many people were killed here; however, media didn't report that. After witnessed these atrocities, I still want to live in people. Why do people kill each other while living in peace? "
