State of emergency traps 400 under arrest

AMED – Gülay Koca Öztürkoğlu, member of the Law Commissioner of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) evaluated the arrest of co-mayors of the DBP and party council members and house raids. She expressed that 250 house raids have been conducted and 400 citizens have been held under arrest since July 15.

As political genocide operations have continued in Kurdistan, hundreds of politicians and citizens have been taken into custody in attacks against opposition following attempted coup on July 15. Unlawful detentions and arrests have begun following declaration of the state of emergency and detention period has been extended to 30 days. She said that the attacks against the Kurds have continued non-stop after July 15.

Gülay underlined that detentions, arrests and executions in parallel with destruction and denial policies against Kurdish people have never changed, “However, the ruling power has tried to legitimate some activities under the name of “democracy” with the order of the state of emergency. The detention period has been extended to 30 days; people have been arbitrarily prevented to see their lawyers and families, the right to get information has been denied and confidentiality orders have been issued for files, all these unlawful attempts have been secured under legal guarantees.

‘250 house raids, 400 people detained’

Gülay said, “The Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), DBP provincial and district administrators, co-mayors and party council members are among those who have taken into custody and 250 house raids have been conducted.

Number of arrested and detained people: 619

Party Council Members: 118

Jailed Party Council Members: 21

Party Council Members under arrest: 2

Number of Jailed people: 21 co-mayors, four municipalities’ council members
