Sur report: people, nature and culture affected

AMED – Women’s Academy and Eğitim Sen (Education and Science Workers' Union) reported the effects of destruction in Sur carried out under the name of ‘ban’ (curfew) on children and women after self-government resistance in the town.

After the historic self-government resistance lasted 103 days in the Sur district of Diyarbakır, the state’s pillage and ‘ban’ policies have continued in five neighborhoods. Women’s Academy and Eğitim Sen (Education and Science Workers' Union) made investigation about children and women in the neighborhoods of Sur where curfew was lifted on May 22. The report prepared by talking to one thousand women. The report point out that women and children in neighborhoods, where the intensity of war carried out, are suffering trauma.

A team of sociologists, psychologists, social workers, teachers and child development experts went to İskenderpaşa, Nebi Cami, Melik Ahmet, Cami Kebir and Ziya Gökalp neighborhoods to prepare the report. The report reads, “According to the information recorded in this process, 10 women and seven children lost their lives. The study was carried out in certain neighborhoods based upon the ban has continued to be imposed in some neighborhoods. According to figures concerning the condition of children and women obtained during home visits, as a result of curfew, the conflict atmospheric has caused psychological, economic, cultural and social destruction on all society, particularly women and children.”

There are several titles in the report such as “Socio-Demographic Structure of Sur, Curfew Process, and Observations on the neighborhood conditions, Education, Health, Curfew and the psychosocial status after the conflict.”
