Refugee children want to return to their homes

NEWS CENTER- According to a research conducted in Istanbul by the Development of Social and Cultural Life Association (SKYGD), 92 percent of Syrian children living in Turkey want to return their country. Only 38 pecent of them receive education and girls have more difficulty in going to school.

Development of Social and Cultural Life Association (SKYGD) released conclusions of the research consisting of interviews with Syrian children living in Turkey on May in the Bağcılar Yüzyıl Neighborhood, Başakşehir Tahtakale Neighborhood, Esenler Birlik Neighborhood, Esenyurt Kıraç Neighborhood ND Şişli Okmeydanı Neighborhood of Istanbul.

Various art workshops for Syrian children, who have to take refuge in Turkey due to ongoing war in Syria, were organized as part of the research. The report titled “A New Language, A New Beginning”. The report emphasizes that refugees have to be registered in order to receive services like education and healthcare sufficiently. 20 percent of boys and about 27 percent of girls are determined to not be registered. It is estimated that 622.000 of children cannot receive education. According to the research, 39 children out of 100 are illiterated and only 38 chidren out of 100 receive education.

Children were also asked what they think about Turkey. While 71 of them say that they hadn't knew anything about Turkey before coming here, 80 of them say that they wouldn't like to be here, if there wasn't a war in their country.

92 children want to return to their homes and only 7 children say that they don't want to return to Syria, because they think that there is nothing left to return to.

The children expectations from Turkey are; better houses, job opportunities, education and healthcare. However, there are also children saying, “I don't have any expectation”, “I want to return to my country and become a doctor” and “Social, artistic activities and bicycle”.
