MÛŞ – Co-mayor of Varto Municipality Sabite Ekinci stated that women are the first target due to their transformative power. “There is co-mayor system in our municipalities, this system scares them,” said Sabite.

First women’s organizations have been targeted upon trustee appointments to 25 municipalities governed by the DBP (Democratic Regions Party). The works carried out by women’s organizations affiliated to Silvan and Cizre municipalities have been stopped and Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality Woman Policies Department (The first in Turkey) Head Yüksel Aslan Acer was held in custody for 21 days. Co-mayor of Varto Municipality Sabite Ekinci evaluated these applications. Sabite said, “We see that they are trying to bring down women’s organizations by detaining Yüksel. Trying reducing women to silence in Turkey will be a loss for the society. This mistake should be noticed immediately.”

Sabite pointed out Turkey has become a country which is anti-democratic and doesn’t tolerate differences. Sabite said, “Trustee appointments cannot be accepted and we refuse this. There are many reasons to go towards our municipalities. 10 years later, everybody will understand very well that what the municipalities governed by the DBP are trying to do and how these municipalities are trying to bring democratic life to this society. The Kurdish people take an advanced model for themselves. The step by them cannot be understood by Turkey.”

Sabite emphasized that women are the first target due to their transformative power and role. Sabite said, “The change in women means change in society. As long as women have the power to change and transform, the changes in society is inevitable. Taking women as first target is the fear on the transformative power of women in society. There is co-mayor system in our municipalities, this system scares them.”
