AMED – Cancer patient Hazal Aslan, wife of arrested teacher Serkan Aslan, has had difficulty due to the arrest of her husband. “My husband arrested for saying, “don’t let children die’. He should be released immediately,” said Hazal.

As oppression on suspended teachers in Diyarbakır has continued, 21 teachers were taken into custody in the house raids on September 21. Seven of these teachers were jailed on charges of “carrying out activity on behalf of an [illegal] organization”. One of jailed teachers is Serkan Aslan. Serkan’s wife Hazal Unat Aslan stated she would stand up for her husband’s struggle.

Hazal stated that the teachers have been suspended from their duties for their a-day strike action, which carried out in order to prevent children to die. Hazal said, “They jailed them according to their own laws regardless of any law and right. They may be jailed for being good teachers, joining their union activity and being teachers in this country. We experienced that in 1990s when we were children and now our children are experiencing the same thing. My husband’s struggle firstly is humanistic and union and legal struggle.”

A cancer patient Hazal underlined that her husband supported her in every part of life. Hazal stated that her treatment is still continue and, “He did all housework and took care of children. I shouldn’t carry even one kilo of weight. Of course, we will have difficulties due to my health condition. Therefore, I demand my husband to be released and this injustice should be ended immediately .”
