Women shape Ronahi Newspaper

QAMIŞLO – Ronahi Newspaper, which has offices in three cantons of Rojava, turns 6 on October 16. The newspaper is published in Arabic, Kurdish and Syriac languages and has 20 female employees. The newspaper’s Mizgin supplement has been published every 15 days for children. One of the newspaper employees Berivan Xelil and Melek Demirtaş stated that the newspaper comes to these days with women’s labor.

Ronahi Newspaper, which began to be published on October 16, 2011during the revolution, has left fifth years behind. We talked to female employees the newspaper’s five years. Berivan Xelil stated that the newspaper began to be published in Aleppo and continued: “The newspaper’s office had to be moved to Efrîn Canton due to political situation in the region. And we opened our office Cizîr Canton in 2013. Now, we have offices in three cantons.”

Berivan noted that the newspaper has been published in many topics such as women, social life, culture, and art and political and she continued her words as follows: “Women began to work for the newspaper in Efrîn. Day by day, the numbers of women have begun to increase. There are about 20 female friends in the newspaper. There is a women’s page in the newspaper and a women’s team is responsible for this page. There are political, economic, social and culture topics in this page. Also, the women are preparing the newspaper's design and layout. Rohani’s Mizgin supplement has been published every 15 days for children. Mizgin supplement has been published in Arabic, Kurdish and Syriac languages by women.”


Melek Demirtaş, responsible journalist for the women's page of Ronahi, said, “Our aim is to be the voice of the people and carry the society’s culture into the future. There isn’t too much writing culture in Rojava and Syria. Our endeavor is to transform this culture. There is a revolution led by women in Rojava and we are trying to report that.

“The newspaper was published in Kurdish and Arabic when it was published in Aleppo and Efrîn. The pages of our newspaper were less. The content of the newspaper have begun to be enriched with labor and effort. We will celebrate the sixth year of Rohani Newspaper and we are happy.”
