ŞIRNEX – The municipality tried to build 400 houses for Şırnak people, who live in tents for months; however, the governor rejected the demand by saying, “Public budget will be spent unnecessarily”.

As the curfew declared on March 14 in Şırnak has continued to be imposed, almost all houses in the city have been demolished. 70% of houses in Dicle, Bahçelievler, Cumhuriyet, Gazipaşa, İsmetpaşa, Yeni and Yeşilyurt neighborhoods have been brought down in ruins. Meanwhile, Şırnak people went to highlands and set up tents there in order to not leave their lands. They live in the tents despite all difficulties such as Electricity, water and heating. Şırnak Municipality developed a project to build 400 houses for the people; however, Şırnak Governorate sees the rebuilding houses as unnecessary and didn’t allow the construction by saying, “Public budget will be spent unnecessarily.”

Şırnak Municipality co-mayor Serhat Kadirhan said, “Thousands of people live in the tents. We want to build 400 houses to protect the people from cold weather and we completed our preparations for that. However, state forces prevented us and they didn’t allow the workers to work.”

Serhat stated they sent an official letter to the Governorate after they were prevented by police. Serhat said the Governorate called them and said, “We won’t allow building the houses unless we make a decision on the matter.” Serhat asked the reason and the Governorate told them, “Public budget will be spent unnecessarily.”
