International Women’s Museums Conference begins

ISTANBUL – “International Women’s Museums Conference” organized by joint work of the Women’s Museum Istanbul and Istanbul Bilgi University, Faculty of Communication, began at the Salt Galata. The International Council of Museums (ICOM) President Suay Aksoy stated that museums are at a crossroads in terms of women’s history.

“International Women’s Museums Conference” to be held on October 20-22, 2016, organized by joint work of the Women’s Museum Istanbul and Istanbul Bilgi University, Faculty of Communication began at the Salt Galata. Opening speech of the conference attended by women’s museums in many countries was made by Meral Akkent on behalf of the Women’s Museum Istanbul. After the speech of Meral, Asu Aksoy of Istanbul Bilgi University made a speech. She said, “Women’s museums opens the concept of gender up for discussion as well as makes us to question the concept of museology.”

Following the speech of Asu, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) President Suay Aksoy took the floor. She said the gener’68 generation was a luck generation and continued: “This generation thought and believed they could change the world and they partly changed it. The next generation also did good things.”

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) Director General Anne Catherinerbert said woman and museum are interdependent important words and continued: “The role of museum is actually directly related to the women’s social role. We will work to make museums inclusionary and a memory for two days.”

The conference will continue until October 22.
