Police attack Hopa women’s protest

ARTVİN – Police attacked women, who marched against the draft bill legitimizing sexual abuse in Hopa district of Artvin, and detained a woman.

In Artvin’s Hopa district, women gathered in Hopa Park in order to protest the “rape law” (draft bill on sexual abuse) and began to march to Hopa Square by carrying a banner reads, “Rape is a crime against humanity, cannot be justified”. Police built a barricade and tried to prevent the march. Women shouted the slogan, “Long live women’s solidarity” and cleared the barricade. Police attacked the women by using tear gas and truncheons. Hopa women shouted slogan, “That law will not pass” and reached the square.

Socialist Women's Assembly Hopa Representative Nurcan Vayiç made the first talk in the square. Nurcan said, “You should lift this barricade against rape law”

Police asked the women to disperse and tried to detain two women. A woman was taken away from the police officers; however a woman was detained. The women are waiting in front of Hope Police Headquarters for their friend.
